How our Smart-Hose® Safety System works:
Hose assemblies represent the weak-link in all hazardous chemical transfer applications. Hose assemblies can get damaged in day to day operations, fittings can separate from the hose, the hose assembly can be severed during a transfer operation, hose assemblies can rupture during a transfer operation and a pull-away incident can occur. Smart-Hose® Technologies manufactures engineered hose assemblies that are designed and integrated with a valve in each end fitting. If the hose assembly experiences a catastrophic hose failure the Smart-Hose® Safety System is designed to instantaneously shut down the flow in both directions. Certified as a passive safety device the Smart-Hose® Safety System needs no human intervention to activate.
Each fitting is designed and integrated with a valve, each valve is connected to the corresponding valve in the opposing fitting via a cable that is positioned in the ID of the hose assembly. The cable is longer than the hose assembly and acts like a compression spring that is designed to hold both valves in the open position during normal operating conditions. If the hose assembly experiences a catastrophic hose failure like a fitting ejection, hose separation or a pull-away incident occurs the outward force generated from the cable is removed and the flow of the hazardous material instantaneously forces both valves closed. Note that in order for the Smart-Hose® Safety System to engage during a hose rupture the additional cable located inside the hose assembly must extrude out of the rupture.
